Hair Talk: Taking Care of Bleached Hair

Hey guys! I decided to write another post for Hair Talk about how to take care of bleached hair since I have friends who is or is planning to bleach their hair. In this post, I will discuss what I do to take care of my almost 2 year old bleached hair. :)

If you remember from my last Hair Talk post, I kind of covered some of the maintenance and upkeep for my hair. A lot of people would always comment on how my hair is still okay despite all the bleaching and coloring I do. I would tell them that I researched a lot and find time to take care of it. So, I wanted to share to you what I do to take care of my bleached hair! It can feel a bit of a chore, but it's necessary if you want to keep your hair happy and healthy.

First thing I did was I adjusted the frequency of shampooing my hair. Instead of shampooing everyday, I resorted to twice or thrice a week. Bless my scalp for not being that oily, I can still manage to go to the office without me looking like a grease ball. haha I have read an article before saying that it's quite healthy for the hair not to shampoo everyday. It said that too much shampooing may cause your scalp to dry and your hair more fragile than it should be. One hack that I do is to put baby powder along my roots. It acts like a dry shampoo for me (coz I'm too kuripot to actually buy one lol) for those days when its too oily or greasy than normal. Another perk of not shampooing daily is that when you have hair color, it will last longer. Most shampoos in the market have sulfates that causes the color to fade quicker. They aid in striping off the color molecules in your hair cuticle. (source) I use Nanny Rose's Gugo & Lawat sulfate-free shampoo which I bought at Watsons. One thing about this shampoo is that it doesn't lather easily. I use it for 2 days then use a normal shampoo for the third time. The conditioner I use it with is Dove Oxygen and Nourishment.

Next thing I did was that I deep condition/hot oil my hair once every week. I put virgin coconut oil (I bought mine from one of those Zenutrients stalls in SM) on my hair before going to bed, put on a shower cap and sleep. In the morning, I just wash my hair with normal shampoo then put conditioner. VCO is a wonder oil since it does a lot for me and it's one of the products I would encourage anyone to have. It makes my hair extra soft and shiny and more manageable than most days. :) I also sometimes use small amounts of Argan Oil (bought from Watsons again) as a leave-on conditioner whenever I feel that my hair is a bit dry.
VCO is really a wonder oil for its many uses.
Last thing I did was to buy a keratin serum (Piolang CP-1 Protein Silk Ampoule) from Althea which I use almost everyday. It's really effective and very cheap! It makes my hair more manageable, shiny, and hydrated. It's a product I recommend to everyone who asks what I use to maintain my hair. Update: sadly, as of writing, this product isn't available on Althea anymore.
I hope Althea restocks this item!
But don't fret; I have been using an alternative product that was recommended by my office mates.
It has a nice scent as well!
Pretty odd seeing it's a vinegar treatment, but I swear it's effective! It has the same effect as the keratin serum but it seems to last longer compared to it. My office mates bought one and we all share from it. I don't use it everyday though, only during the times that my hair is quite unmanageable or kind of hard to comb. I refill a small spray bottle and spray generously on my hair while I comb it using my fingers. I immediately feel my hair become softer in a matter of minutes!

Aaaaand that's all! If you've noticed, I don't like going to salons that much because they're too pricey and sometimes they don't know what they're doing? Or they'll try to sales-talk you into going for their treatment that will end up damaging your hair further. I don't know though, maybe that's just me & my thing for DIY stuff. haha I still do encourage everyone to seek professional help about it if you are really skeptic! After all, it's your crowning glory.

I hope this post helps everyone on their brave hair ventures! Feel free to comment or ask me anything here. :)

xx
