Hair Talk: Types of Hair Dyes

Hello guys! I'm back with another Hair Talk post! This time I'm going to be talking about different types of hair dyes.

Hair dyes differ in terms of how long they last on the hair. I'll be writing about the ones I know, but I'll try to dive more on the semi-permanent ones since that's what I regularly use.

Permanent Hair Dyes

The term "permanent" here means that your hair typically won't go back to the color you previously had, unless it grows out. These dyes are usually used in salons but can be bought from drugstores in boxes as well. These type of hair dyes last the longest compared to the other types, so it doesn't often need re-applying. The colors available for this type of hair dye are more on the natural-looking shades of blonde, red, brown, or black. Using this dye involves mixing the it with an oxidizer/developer (like hydrogen peroxide used in hair bleach) and ammonia. Among the three, this type of hair dye is the most damaging since the chemicals in it are stronger.

Hair Bleach and Highlights

As I have discussed in my previous post, bleaching is also permanent so I classified it under the permanent hair dyes. Though it doesn't exactly color your hair, using bleach on your hair will alter the color permanently.

How long it lasts: In general, it will remain on your hair until your it grows out.
How to use: Read the instructions on the box it comes with and follow as closely as possible so you don't mess it up. Make sure to wear gloves and use it in a well-ventilated area!

Temporary Hair Dyes

These are fun to use since it won't damage your hair at all! They usually last a day or until you wash it off, depending on your mood. lol Temporary hair colors can be in chalk, paste, or spray-on form. I have personally used the chalk and spray-on before. From my experience, it takes a while to put on but it can be vivid if you layer them on more. Do note that this will not lighten your hair if you have dark hair, but it would look more vivid in lighter hair.

How long it lasts: Usually 2-4 shampoos, but if you have blonde hair, it may take longer to wash out.
How to use: For hair chalks, you should wet your hair first then part it to small sections. depending on where you want the color, run the chalk down the strands of your hair. Spray-ons are just like hairspray but with added color. It's best to style your hair before spraying.

Demi-permanent Hair Dyes

I've been hearing about this before, but I can't really understand what it is. lol As far as I've researched, demi-permanent hair colors are those that are longer lasting than semi-permanent ones, but not as long as permanent hair dyes. These dyes usually don't require a developer/oxidizer but still has ammonia for the colors to last longer. There are also demi-permanent colors that are ammonia-free which can be used to tone blonde hair.

How long it lasts: 12-28 shampoos
How to use: I don't really know, honestly. I'm guessing it's like with the permanent dyes? lol You need to wear gloves and be in a well ventilated area.

Semi-permanent Hair Dyes

This type of hair color is the one I'm most familiar with, since I've been using them for about 5 years now. I really love using semi-permanent hair dyes because it lets me try different colors without the danger of ruining my hair or putting too much chemicals on my head. It usually has a consistency similar to hair conditioners and doesn't contain any harmful chemical that could damage your hair.

How long it lasts: 4-12 shampoos
How to use: Make sure your hair is clean and dry for the dye to work well. You can apply it directly to your hair using your hands or wear gloves if you don't want it to stain your hands and nails for a few days. You don't need to worry about the smell, since most of these types of dyes smell good, like grapes or mild generic hair conditioner. You can dilute it with a white conditioner or mix it together with other colors to create a unique and custom color you like. Leaving it on your hair longer wouldn't harm you so it's okay and would even make the color more vibrant (as long as your hair is well saturated with the dye), in my experience.

The brand I like using and would strongly recommend is Punky Colors because it's the most vivid and consistent colors I've used, and it's not too expensive like higher end hair color brands. I try not to wash my hair as often to prolong the color, but touch ups are pretty easy since it's, again, just like a normal hair conditioner.

I hope this has been informative to anyone who reads it! If you have any questions, feel free to message me or comment in my posts. Until next hair talk! :)

xx
